The Joys of Social Bookmarking

One of my personal favorite social bookmarking sites is Pintrest. Its an account that all creative minds have! You can browse any category you please on Pintrest: from baking, to gardening, party prep, and my latest search- History classroom essentials! Pintrest is home to websites or an individuals own creations and ideas. It gives you the opportunity to share ideas with each other! For example, lets say you want to set up your classroom for a collaborative method but you're not sure how to do it. Searching it on Pintrest gives you access to how OTHERS have used it in their classroom! It gives you the opportunity to see what others have done with the same concept that you are looking for. In education, teachers are always sharing and collaborating ideas with one another which is exactly what Pinterest is all about! I will plan on using this site to search for creative ideas to incorporate in my classroom!

Another social book marking site that I like is Twitter. Twitter is a social media site that lets its users follow pages of celebrities, news outlets, and other individuals who share the same interests. All you have to do is press a simple "follow" button. For many students, twitter is apart of their everyday lives. It serves as their main source of information in regards to what is happening in the world around them. Tweets give a direct an instant news report that allows for quick and easy updates as the story unfolds. It was not until I went to college and took education courses that I figured out that this site could actually be useful in the classroom! Teachers can make their own twitter page that students can follow to keep them updated on upcoming assignments, news stories breaking that are related to content, and to start a discussion of something they are learning in class. When used appropriately, there are an enormous amount of possibilities that can be achieved through a classroom Twitter. Teachers can even give historical figures a "fake twitter account". This site is a great way to engage students, share their thoughts with each other, and reach them in a setting that many of them are already comfortable with.
